  2. ➞ things that are poems to me pt.2

    ialwaysfeelfree:

Sometimes while I ride the subway I try to look at each person and imagine what they look like to someone who is totally in love with them. I think everyone has had someone look at them that way, whether it was a lover, or a parent, or a friend, whether they know it or not. It’s a wonderful thing, to look at someone to whom I would never be attracted and think about what looking at them feels like to someone who is devouring every part of their image, who has invisible strings that are connected to this person tied to every part of their body. I think this fun pastime is a way of cultivating compassion. It feels good to think about people that way, and to use that part of my mind that I think is traditionally reserved for a tiny portion of people I’ll meet in my life to appreciate the general public. I wish I thought about people like this more often. I think it’s the opposite of what our culture teaches us to do. We prefer to pick people apart to find their flaws. Cultivating these feelings of love or appreciation for random people, and even for people I don’t like, makes me a more forgiving and appreciative person toward myself and people I love. Also, it’s just a really excellent pastime. (Dean Spade)

This literally turned my shit day into solid gold.  Thank you.

  3. „Advice for young feminists? Do something else besides feminism. I’m serious. The feminist blogosphere is oversaturated in my opinion. Please, find something else you love and take feminist theory there. It gets lonely over here in tech and video games – I have a great crew of other feminists but we are a little island in a vast sea. We need more feminist minded business bloggers, feminist theory wielding finance bloggers. Labor organizers with a feminist lens blogging. Can you imagine what Deadspin (the sports blog) would look like with a feminist on staff? Restructure writes about science, tech and feminism – join her! Publish a blog doing literary criticism with a feminist lens! Take on the NYT! Talk about class issues and feminism. Whatever it is, apply your feminism in a different space.“

  6. (Alternative Title:  I Should Be Studying for My Goddamn Finals, But I am a Motherfucking Fool so Instead I Will Write Some Introspective Bullshit and Refresh Facebook Every 45 Seconds)

    - I no longer have the patience to entertain miserable people.  There are lots of people out there that project their insecurities on others, and I really don’t have time to be your friend if you are going to tell me that I suck.

    - On that note, I’ve realized that it is important to project positivity in general.  Everyone has off days, but in general I think people take you more seriously if you are pleasant, courteous, and excited about life.  Life is usually not as horrible as you imagine it to be.

    - Being outside a lot is critical to mental health.  Seriously.

    - If you aren’t thrilled by what you do, do something else.  Studying English made me feel inadequate and bored.  Studying Political Science makes me feel fucking thrilled, to the point where I know no one wants to hear me talk about the shit I learned in class that day, and I can see them getting bored with me, but I cannot fucking stop talking about it.  If you can’t talk about your hobbies until the person listening to you speak asks you to dear god, shut the fuck up, you are doing it wrong.

    - That said, books are great.  So is writing.  People in general have a lot of interesting things to say.

    - Also on that note, taking a vested interest in people is important.  Talk to strangers.  Ask the weird bearded guy at Tedeschi how his day is going (this particular option promises exciting results).  Being nice goes a long way, particularly in a city where people are, in general, dicks to one another.

    - Conversely, being alone is important.  Traveling, dining, going to movies, going for walks; these things all take on such a different light when you aren’t distracted.  Realistically, everyone that is close to you could leave at any minute.

    - It is important to work hard.  It is important to assess your current amount of work and then attempt to exceed it.  Being bored is dumb.  Your quality of life will almost certainly improve if you attempt to do everything with integrity, and if you push yourself beyond what is comfortable.

    - Not liking yourself is a waste of your time.  You are probably cool.  You can probably find people who think that you are cool.  There is someone out there who wishes they could do something as well as you can, there will always be people willing to have sex with you, you weren’t born in Darfur or North Korea, and you don’t have any horrific or crippling disfigurements or diseases.  That should make you feel pretty good.

    - People will like you a lot more for being able to admit when you are wrong than if you are always right.

    - Don’t tell people to do things, ask them.  If they still don’t do it, you’re either demanding too much, or that person doesn’t respect you.

    - Money ruins people.

    - Forgive.  It makes life easier.  Grudges will not make you happy.

    - The only way you can actually change things in the world that piss you off is by becoming as educated as you possibly can, convincing a lot of people that you are right, getting those people to give you lots of money, and spending that money fixing the things that piss you off.  That’s capitalism, sad but true.  And there will not be a revolution in our lifetime.  Most Americans are not privileged white college kids living in Massachusetts.  Change comes incrementally.  Even the Civil Rights Movement, one of the most widespread and publicized uprisings in American history, took fucking FOREVER to gain any ground and has STILL not been fully realized.  That’s why I love public policy; legislation is something that has an immediate impact.

    - You are not special and you are not better than anyone else.

    - Taking a risk is usually worth it.

    - Health is wealth, furreal.  Adequate sleep, water, exercise, vegetables, rinse and repeat.

    - Everything is usually fucking hilarious, so just calm down.
